ARTIST STATEMENT

My work honors the lineage of feminist artists, scholars, and art historians who made it possible to investigate the maternal as both an embodied experience and a specific positionality. While many women artists have depicted their children, pioneers like Mary Kelly and Mierle Laderman Ukeles were among the first to examine the labor, repetition, and attentiveness embedded in caregiving itself.
For over fifteen years, I have explored the subjective maternal through video, sculpture, performance, photography, sound, and writing. Although rooted in my lived experience as a mother to my daughter, this inquiry extends into mentorship and collaboration with others. For me, mother is a verb—an active, evolving, and performative process. My practice emerges from this performativity of mothering: to and with another, and from my own subjective, feeling self.
Through sculpture, photography, performance, video, and sound, my work makes visible the quiet, often unseen love and labor of motherhood. In my ongoing performance In Balance With (2010–present), collaboration with my now adult daughter becomes a visible, changeable expression of mothering. Other projects—Mother Lode, Symphony of the Domestic, Cut From the Same, Fabric of Life, and Sharing Space—continue this sustained exploration of the maternal as a lived, relational practice.
