HONORS TUTORIAL COLLEGE TUTORSHIPS

Non-Thesis Tutorial (Women and Gender Sexuality Studies), Julia Cook, Ohio University, Fall 2018
Through extensive reading, responses and discussions, we looked at the history of the maternal in contemporary art. From there, we looked at how the concept of the maternal and radical care can be a lens by which to view, investigate and create artwork.

Thesis Tutorial, Erica Spilger, Ohio University, Fall and Spring, 2017-16
Based on the work that we did the year before, Erica and I continued to focus on her creative
thesis project, an exhibition titled, Expression and Repression: Contemporary Art Censorship in
America, the first-ever student curated exhibition at the Kennedy Museum of Art. Spilger was
responsible not just for the selection of the artists and artworks for her exhibition, but created an
educational iPad guide for the museum, gave a gallery tour and talk, participated in a panel
discussion with one of the artists, John Sims, wrote and gave the introduction for Sims’ lecture,
and wrote the press release for the events surrounding the opening reception.

Non-Thesis Tutorial, Erica Spilger, Ohio University, Fall and Spring, 2016-15
At first focused on the working structure of the gallery and exhibitions, this tutorial shifted from
practical to research-based as Spilger narrowed her final thesis prospectus to a planned exhibition
relating to her studies in censorship from the 1980s-early 2000s.

Non-Thesis Tutorial, Emily Mantell, Ohio University, Fall and Spring, 2016-15
Focusing on the gallery and function of that system, Mantell continued her research in censorship
focused on Chinese and American contemporary art. Because of the work we did together, she
successfully orchestrated and installed a juried exhibition at a local gallery.
